National Honor Society (NHS)
National Honor Society members uphold the four pillars of NHS in their schools and communities: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The Tesoro High School chapter of NHS positively impacts our community by holding community service activities, providing after-school tutoring for students, and promoting the spirit of service in our surrounding communities.

Expectation/Responsibilities of Members Of NHS Member
Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. Chapters in more than 12,500 high schools across the nation strive to give practical meaning to the mission statement of National Honor Society. National Honor Society has four main purposes: “To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.”
Membership, however, is more than an honor. It incurs a responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. In order for our chapter to be effective and meaningful, each member must become involved. This includes participating in all of the chapter meetings and projects. In addition to these expectations members will hold a positive online presence in social media that reflect the pillars of NHS. Violations of these essential elements could result in expulsion from NHS. Involvement will promote a positive experience and enhance the club.
Members are required to complete 5 hours of tutoring, 3 hours of NHS-sponsored service activities, and 5 hours of outside community service per semester. Applications for membership open at the beginning of the fall semester for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Applying for NHS Membership
- The Tesoro chapter of NHS accepts applications during the Fall Semester, typically during the month of September. Notification of this process will be disseminated through Canvas, School announcements, flyers around campus, and the school’s Instagram page.
- Application requirements include, and are not limited to, being a sophomore, junior, or senior as well as having a high standard for the following.
- GPA of 3.6 or above
- Prior leadership positions.
- Community service experience.
- All sections of the NHS application must be completed for membership consideration.
- All applications must be submitted on or before the due date.
- Membership is not achieved by completing the NHS application only. Membership to NHS is limited to a small number of outstanding students in order to remain a manageable and effective organization on campus.
- Tesoro has many outstanding students so acceptance is difficult to achieve.
- Not all applicants get in. The past three years has had a 65% acceptance rate.
- Applications are reviewed by a panel of faculty members.
- Applicants will receive a notification on their application status in October.
